On April 3, 2026, the mandatory national standard "Safety Technical Specification for Power Banks" (GB 47372—2026) was officially released and will take effect on April 1, 2027. Organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, this standard will play a significant role in regulating the power bank market, promoting industrial upgrading, and protecting consumer rights.

China is the world's largest producer and consumer of power banks, but the market faces issues such as outdated processes and inconsistent product quality among some enterprises. Against this backdrop, the new standards enhance safety requirements in five key areas based on two existing national standards: First, improving battery protection capabilities under high temperatures and overcharging conditions, with the addition of a needle penetration test; Second, introducing lithium plating detection after cycling aging to reduce the risk of short circuits during prolonged use; Third, mandating real-time monitoring of critical battery parameters and the ability to store and retrieve abnormal information; Fourth, implementing unique serial number management to allow consumers to access core product details; Fifth, strengthening control over the entire production process.

After the standard is implemented, consumers can continue using the compliant CCC-certified products they have already purchased. Enterprises are required to adhere to the new standard for production. A 12-month transition period is established, during which companies may choose to follow either the new or old standard, ensuring a smooth industry transition.

The standard was initiated in September 2025, led by the China Institute for Electronic Technology Standardization and jointly developed with enterprises and organizations from multiple fields. Extensive research, testing, solicitation of opinions, and verification were conducted during the development process to ensure the content is scientifically feasible. In the next step, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will collaborate with relevant departments to strengthen industry management and promote high-quality industrial development.
